We have a scheduled observation evening, however we have been foiled by the weather (one of joys of being into astronomy!) on several occasions so as always we have a contingency plan in place.
Should the weather be in our favour, we will be heading to Win Green, as usual. It is October so don’t forget you will need to wrap up warmly, standing about for a few minutes to hours will certainly let the chill set in.
We have yet to decide on a time so I shall be posting this closer to the time, with hopefully some news on what we could expect to see.
On that note, you do not need any equipment, although do feel free to bring it if you do have it. Perhaps a pair of binoculars or even a telescope. We do ask if you are imaging, and use a screen, please set up towards the bottom of the car park, just to allow the observers to allow their eyes to become accustomed to the dark.
Our plan for bad weather means talks on things that members have expressed an interest in finding out more. We have a wealth of knowledge within the club and would like to share this with other members.
This time it will be on learning observing the skies and how to use telescopes. Working in a couple of small groups our very own Colin and Gareth are going to show us how to watch the skies. From how to use telescopes, and which to use for lunar, constelations and planets to deep sky through to how to find objects in the night sky.
The Talk will be in our usual meeting place of The Assembly Rooms at the Grosvenor Arms, Shaftesbury.
See the Programme page for directions and parking for the Grovesnor Arms.
Directions by car to WinGreen:
From Shaftesbury, take A30 towards Salisbury. In Ludwell, turn right towards Ashmore. Look for the sign for Win Green on the left and the access road to Win Green car park is on your left, before you reach the B3081 Grid reference for the car park is ST923204
Get to know your telescope
Back by popular demand, we have a Telescope Workshop.
If you have a telescope sitting in the attic and want to know more about it, or you’re just at loss with where to start with it, come along and have a chat with our resident experts.
They have a gargantuan (see what I did there, Gargantua being the black hole from Interstellar :-D) amount of knowledge and they are willing to share.
No need to feel shy or worried, nothing too small for them to explain.
This will be held at
Lindlar Hall, Lindlar Close, Shaftesbury, SP7 8PS.
The close is just off Wincombe Lane before you get to Shaftesbury C of E Primary School.
Drive into the close, as it bears round to the left, opposite a turning to the right is the path to the hall. On road parking is available around the close - which is fairly quiet on a Saturday morning.
The workshop is free for members but a £4 donation from non-members would be appreciated.
